北方林の微気象を研究する上で, 森林群落高は重要な森林構造要素の一つである. しかし, 様々な森林に適用可能な群落高の客観的な決定方法は確立していなかった. 本稿では, 著者らが北方林を対象に森林生態学と微気象学との接点として取り組んだ二種類の森林群落高の決定方法について紹介し, 既存の群落高に見られた問題点をどう解決したかを概説する
It is important to accurately estimate forest canopy height ― the height of the highest vegetation components above ground level― for micrometeorological studies on boreal forests. However,previous definitions of forest canopy height based on inventory data have some uncertainties because of the arbitrary criteria for tall trees that account for the top height (i.e. mean height of tall trees selected by a certain definition), or because of the effect of many shorter understory trees on Lorey’s mean height (i.e.mean height weighted by basal area). In this article, I introduce the cumulative basal area inflection (CuBI)height (Nakai et al.,2010),as well as the aerodynamic canopy height (Nakai et al., 2008a), which overcome problems in previous definitions of forest canopy height.
