This paper provides a review of the theoretical literature on modern political economy. It discusses the contemporary analytical theories that seek to understand the political foundations of economic performance and public accountability. In particular, it focuses on theories that are built on microeconomics and game theory foundations to provide insights into two fundamental issues in political economics: (1) identifying an appropriate political institutions conducive to economic development; and (2) holding a government accountable and virtuous-acting for the common good of society.
